Located in Mezzovico, Switzerland, the Mezzovico Pedestrian and Bicycle Footbridge spans across via Cavazz, connecting the picturesque banks of the river Vedeggio. It plays a crucial role as part of the national N3 cycle path network. The footbridge facilitates safe and efficient passage for cyclists and pedestrians along the North-South axis.
The footbridge’s structural design is characterised by two parallel trusses supported beneath the walking surface by a reticular support plane. These trusses are meticulously crafted using square-section RHS profiles, with 120 x 120 mm for the upper chord and ribs, and 80 x 80 mm for the diagonals. Emphasising both form and function, the upper chord forms a graceful circumferential arch with an intrados radius of 76.3 m. The height of this arch varies from 100 mm to 190 mm.
Before undergoing renovation, the footbridge featured a metal handrail and an unconventional horizontal stainless steel cable guardrail. These elements have now been replaced for enhanced safety and aesthetic appeal. The walking surface, initially comprising deteriorated wooden joists, has been upgraded with 11 new precast concrete slabs.
These slabs, totalling approximately 16 tonne, are engineered for superior frost resistance. They are also treated with a hydrophobic finish, ensuring durability in all weather conditions. Their rough, non-slip texture was achieved through meticulous surface washing and the application of a retardant during formwork.
To further enrich its architectural integrity, empty triangular spaces within the footbridge are now filled with perforated sheet metal. This metal showcases a natural oxidised (rust) finish that allows for transparency and natural ventilation. The main truss structure has been meticulously painted in a rust colour, harmonising with the warm tones of the surrounding natural landscape. The light yellow hue of the Saltrio limestone aggregate used in the paving slabs complements this aesthetic, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing pedestrian experience.
The Mezzovico Pedestrian and Bicycle Footbridge renovation showcases innovative, safe, and aesthetically harmonious design that integrates well with its natural riverside setting.
