‘Casa O Cantagua,’ known as ‘The Boomerang House,’ designed by Román y Basualto Arquitectos, stands as a harmonious integration into the scenic coastal landscape of Zapallar, Chile. This architectural masterpiece offers a seamless union of natural surroundings and innovative design principles.
The entrance, marked by a suspended bridge and concrete wall, beckons visitors into a space where the boundary between indoor and outdoor blurs gracefully. A central transparent void serves as both a circulation hub and a visual pause, framing breathtaking vistas of the sea from the moment one steps inside.
The residence is planned with distinct zones. One wing is dedicated to bedrooms for guests and children, while another wing houses communal areas such as the living room, dining room, and kitchen. A more private level features the master suite and a cosy sitting area. This thoughtful layout ensures spaciousness and fluid movement throughout, promoting a comfortable and high-standard living experience.
Noteworthy in its construction, the house employs specially fabricated steel beams and reinforced concrete slabs. These materials not only provide structural integrity but also contribute to the house’s unique aesthetic, reminiscent of a boomerang gracefully floating towards the sea, then returning to embrace its origin with a view to savour the sunset.
The organic, curvilinear forms of the architecture complement the robustness of concrete, creating a visual dialogue with the gentle waves of the coastline. This thoughtful blend of materials and forms establishes a distinctive atmosphere that invites residents to immerse themselves fully in the coastal environment.
On the rooftop, a standout feature awaits: a spectacular terrace perfectly aligned with the horizon. Here, residents can unwind while taking in panoramic views, whether during the golden hues of sunset or the tranquil beauty of starlit skies. More than just a beachfront residence, The Boomerang House represents a bold vision and elegant execution of architectural design.
