WilkinsonEyre has unveiled its ambitious plan to redevelop the Tavern and Allen stands at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. This follows its successful redesign of the neighbouring Compton and Edrich stands, completed in 2021. Both of these stands are located alongside the acclaimed Media Centre designed by Future Systems.

Approved by Westminster City Council’s Planning Committee and MCC, construction is slated to commence in September 2024, aiming for completion by 2027. The project entails adding a new tier to both stands, effectively boosting the seating capacity of the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground by 1,100 seats. These stands are integral parts of the ground, named after prominent figures in cricket history.

The Compton and Edrich stand to flank the Stirling Prize-winning Media Centre and were part of WilkinsonEyre’s previous redevelopment efforts at Lord’s. Now, attention turns to the Tavern and Allen stands, with plans for significant structural changes. The Allen stand, dating back to the 1930s, will be demolished, and the scoreboard relocated. A modern glass bridge will replace the existing concrete one connecting the Allen stand to the Grade II-listed pavilion by Thomas Verity.

The Tavern stand, known for its historical significance, will see its steel framework exposed. It will also be expanded to include new upper-floor seating, hospitality boxes, a restaurant, and a roof terrace. A striking sculptural roof structure, inspired by the upturned slip cradle used in cricket practice, will provide shelter and serve as a distinctive architectural feature.

Externally, the stands will be adorned with a contemporary facade wrapped in white fins. The roof will extend gracefully above the upper levels, ensuring a blend of functionality and modern aesthetics. This redevelopment project underscores WilkinsonEyre’s commitment to enhancing iconic cricket venues.
