The Mohammed bin Rashid Library (MBR Library) in Dubai is a project of remarkable scale and ambition. Designed to be the largest library and cultural centre in the Arab world, the library’s construction is a complex feat of engineering and collaboration.

The library’s design, inspired by the Rehal (a book rest used for the Holy Quran), presents a significant challenge. The building resembles an open book, with a structure featuring cantilevered components and a sloping roof. To achieve this unique form, the builders rely heavily on prefabricated steel structures. These prefabricated elements are meticulously assembled on-site, ensuring stability and precise alignment.

One of the most notable features of the MBR Library is its extensive use of high-performance glass. This glass, covering 40 per cent of the building’s exterior, provides both aesthetic appeal and functionality. Notably, 72 per cent of the glass facade employs smart technology. This ‘tintable’ electronic glazing can be programmed to control the amount of sunlight entering the library, optimising the reading experience.

Technology plays a vital role not only within the library but also in its construction. Building Information Modeling (BIM) allows for precise planning and coordination of various construction elements. In addition, drones are utilised to monitor progress and capture time-lapse footage, providing valuable insights into the construction process.

An additional layer of complexity comes from the building’s vertical core walls. These walls, essential for structural integrity, are constructed in stages and employ a pin connection system to fix the upper floors to the core, ensuring stability and proper alignment. This innovative approach streamlines construction while maintaining the building’s structural integrity.

Overcoming the challenges posed by the complex design, extensive use of steel, and intricate coordination between specialists, the project is nearing completion. This vast library, set to house millions of books and offer a multitude of cultural experiences, stands as a symbol of Dubai’s commitment to knowledge and growth.
