Fougeron Architecture’s Suspension House, in the United States, completed in 2022, is a striking example of modern residential design effortlessly integrated into its natural surroundings. Suspended between two picturesque California hills and spanning a creek, this innovative home pushes the boundaries of architecture while respecting its environment.
The project faced significant challenges due to California regulations prohibiting homes from being suspended over creeks. Fougeron Architecture ingeniously addressed this by maintaining the exact outline of the existing house and decks while implementing a new structural system anchored to the bedrock of the hills. This allows the house to hover above the water without disturbing the natural flow below.
Transparent materials, including floor-to-ceiling windows and see-through floors, are used extensively throughout the house, offering breathtaking views and enhancing the visibility of the surrounding landscape and water features. The innovative steel framework, visible throughout the interior, supports the third floor and allows for expansive open-plan spaces.
A notable feature is the rotating third floor, which adds a dynamic element to the design by breaking up the mass of the structure and providing additional natural light. This rotation distinguishes the upper level from the lower floors and contributes to the home’s unique aesthetic.
