Indian Railways is advancing a 2,052-kilometre Dankuni-Surat Dedicated Freight Corridor traversing West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, establishing a high-capacity freight link between eastern India’s industrial and mining heartland and the commercial port gateways of the west. The proposed corridor adds to the existing 2,843-kilometre operational DFC network comprising the 1,337-km Eastern DFC and the 1,506-km Western DFC.
Odisha stands to gain significantly from the expansion. As a national leader in steel, aluminium, minerals, and heavy manufacturing, the state generates substantial outbound freight volumes currently constrained by heavily congested mixed-traffic rail lines. The Dankuni-Surat corridor would provide Odisha’s producers with a direct high-speed freight channel to western industrial clusters and export ports, while relieving pressure on existing tracks to improve punctuality and passenger service capacity.
Engineered for heavy-axle loads and double-stack container trains, the DFC infrastructure is projected to lower national logistics costs, reduce transit times, and support a modal shift from road to rail, contributing to India’s broader carbon emission reduction targets across the transport sector.
