Primetals Technologies is strengthening its long-term technology partnership with JSW Steel through two major projects in India, the commissioning of a new steelmaking complex at JSW Vijayanagar Metallic Limited’s Toranagallu plant in Karnataka, and an order for two large pelletizing plants at JSW Steel’s Paradeep facility in Odisha.
At Toranagallu, Primetals has commissioned a new melt shop and two continuous slab casters, including two 350-ton LD converters, primary and secondary dedusting systems, two 350-ton ladle furnaces and two two-strand continuous casters, along with Level 1 and Level 2 automation. The first converter began operations in December 2024, reaching more than 20 heats per day within its first commissioning month, while the second converter was commissioned in August 2025 and reached similar output within six days.
The project marks Primetals’ first installation in India of 350-ton converters equipped with an advanced primary dry dedusting system, combining steam-based heat recovery, a dry electrostatic precipitator and axial-type ID fans to improve energy efficiency and reduce water consumption. The automation package includes the BOF Optimizer for improved carbon content and temperature control, and the Melt Expert electrode control system for the ladle furnaces.
Separately, JSW Steel has ordered two 8 MTPA pelletizing plants at Paradeep, with Primetals providing plant design, engineering, key process equipment and automation. The two facilities will provide a combined pellet production capacity of 16 MTPA, incorporating smart sensors, predictive control models and a digital Pelletizing Optimizer to maintain consistent pellet quality.
