GMR Airports Limited has unveiled a multi-phase modernisation and expansion roadmap for Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur, following the completion of the airport’s privatisation process and handover of around 1,000 hectares of land to GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited.
As part of the first phase, GMR Airports will invest around Rs 300 crore over the next eight years in immediate upgrades to enhance passenger facilities, operational efficiency and technology infrastructure. The long-term plan targets an increase in passenger handling capacity from the current 3 million to 30 million passengers per annum during the 30-year concession period, with potential to scale further to 50 million passengers.
Nagpur Airport is also being developed as a major cargo and logistics hub, targeting a long-term cargo handling capacity of 150,000 metric tonnes annually. Its location at the geographical centre of India and within the MIHAN ecosystem strengthens its case as a strategic aviation and logistics node.
Of the 1,000 hectares allocated, nearly 100 hectares have been earmarked for an Aerocity commercial zone, expected to generate employment and attract further investment. Sustainability measures will include green energy adoption, rainwater harvesting and environmentally responsible construction.
GMR Airports Chairman GBS Raju said the company views airports as engines of economic development, with the Nagpur transformation reflecting its vision of creating world-class aviation ecosystems that strengthen connectivity and contribute to India’s growth.
