The Union Cabinet has approved Phase 2A of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project, a 6.032-kilometre corridor with five stations, four elevated and one underground, at a total cost of Rs 2,169.04 crore including interest during construction.
The corridor will connect Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar and the Airport, significantly improving connectivity to Ahmedabad’s airport and the Sardar Patel Sports Enclave. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Koteshwar Road–Amdavad Airport Metro Corridor will strengthen seamless urban mobility across the city.
Once operational, Phase 2A will bring Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar’s active metro rail network to 77.63 kilometres. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that the expansion will reduce congestion, create employment opportunities and contribute to sustainable urban growth.
The project also holds strategic significance beyond daily commuting. Sports facilities in the vicinity are being planned in connection with the World Police Games 2029 and Commonwealth Games 2030, with the metro link expected to boost tourism, economic activity and ease of movement for residents and visitors alike.
Phase 2A is designed to integrate key residential and commercial zones currently lacking efficient transit access with the existing Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar metro corridor, further advancing the city’s urban transformation agenda.
