Punjab govt inks MoU to set up sports tech extension centre in Jalandhar

The Punjab government has signed an MoU to establish a Sports Goods Technology Extension Centre in Jalandhar to strengthen research and development and enhance the global competitiveness of the sector. The agreement involves the Process cum Product Development Centre (PPDC), Meerut, and the Government Institute of Leather and Footwear Technology (GILFT), Jalandhar.

The initiative is expected to give a significant boost to Jalandhar’s globally recognised sports goods manufacturing industry by providing focused support for innovation and technology upgradation. The proposed centre, with an estimated investment of ₹10 crore, will offer state-of-the-art facilities for testing, training, skill development, and R&D in line with evolving international standards.

Punjab accounts for nearly 65% of India’s sports goods production and about 70% of exports. Jalandhar alone is home to more than 1,000 manufacturing units supplying sports equipment to over 150 international markets. The new centre is expected to help local manufacturers remain competitive in a rapidly expanding global market.
