Jindal Stainless has provided the stainless steel required for the Vande Bharat train’s sleeper coaches, according to a PTI report on September 8. The initial batch of coaches is set to be dispatched later this month, with an official launch anticipated by the end of 2024.

The Vande Bharat sleeper train, designed to operate at 160 km/h, will feature 16 coaches, including 11 AC three-tier, four AC two-tier, and one AC first-class coach, accommodating a total of 823 passengers. The coaches will be built using high-strength tempered 301L austenitic stainless steel supplied by Jindal Stainless. This steel offers enhanced performance, durability, and passenger safety, with superior crash and fire resistance properties and a lower lifecycle cost due to its corrosion resistance.

Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, highlighted that the tempered steel will reduce each coach’s weight by approximately 2 tonnes. This reduction will improve energy efficiency and lower the carbon footprint, aligning with modern rail transport’s sustainability goals.

The Vande Bharat sleeper train represents a significant advancement in Indian Railways, combining mobility, comfort, and modern amenities.
