The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has successfully completed the first double-decker flyover along a metro route in Mira-Bhayander. The project involved relocating approximately 3 kilometers of the main double-circuit Dahanu-Versova power generation line, which was elevated to 75 meters above ground. This makes it the second-tallest of its kind in Maharashtra.
Construction was accelerated using precast I-girder technology and the innovative ‘Tyre Straddle Carrier’ system, which allowed U-girders to be raised without disrupting traffic. This method was essential given the road’s heavy usage, with about 800 vehicles passing through every hour.
Chief Minister Shinde highlighted the project’s impact, noting that it would alleviate traffic congestion, save time and fuel for commuters, and drive development in the Mumbai metropolitan area. He praised the modern technology and planning that contributed to improving overall traffic flow and commuter comfort.
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Commissioner of MMRDA, explained that the flyover was designed to integrate with Metro pillars due to space constraints. He emphasized that this design would allow the Metro to operate on the upper level while maintaining smooth road-level traffic below, offering a modern solution to Mumbai’s transportation challenges and enhancing travel efficiency and safety.
