The Fukuyama Higashi Police Station Ekimae KOBAN represents a significant addition to Fukuyama city’s landscape, situated prominently in front of Fukuyama Station in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan.

Departing from the conventional perception of police boxes as inaccessible spaces, the design aims to establish a ‘friendly police box’ concept, promoting relaxation and accessibility. Stone benches surrounding the entrance serve as inviting street furniture, fostering a welcoming ambiance that encourages pedestrian interaction throughout the day and night.

Paying homage to Fukuyama’s rich cultural heritage, the design incorporates elements inspired by local landmarks. The building’s shape symbolises the traditional lighthouse of ‘Tomo no ura,’ a historical cultural asset of the city. Additionally, the use of titanium zinc steel panels on the exterior walls draws inspiration from Fukuyama Castle, uniquely clad in steel among Japanese castles, creating a distinct identity for the police box.

Reflecting Fukuyama’s association with the steel industry, the choice of materials emphasises the city’s industrial character. Titanium zinc alloy panels for the exterior walls and locally sourced cedar woods contribute to the aesthetic appeal while serving as a testament to the city’s steel heritage. The selection of stone for the benches further supports the goal of revitalising the local industry through the promotion of regional materials.

Addressing site conditions and planning challenges, the design incorporates a plaza in front of the building to facilitate pedestrian movement and safety, particularly at night. Security considerations are paramount, with strategically positioned windows at the office area ensuring visibility for police officers while maintaining privacy for pedestrians.

Structurally, the police box features a steel frame with titanium zinc alloy panels for the exterior walls, chosen for their corrosion-resistant properties and suitability for Fukuyama’s environment. Cedar woods adorn the interior, offering natural gradient shades that enhance the space’s character and charm.
