ABB Joins SMS Group for Electrification of Hazira Mill Expansion

ABB, a major player in electrification and automation, has announced its collaboration with SMS group to deliver an electric powertrain system for the upcoming steel mill of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel in Hazira. In a statement, ABB revealed its role in supplying all the medium-voltage (MV) motors and MV drives required for the new hot strip mill in Gujarat, Hazira.

This joint effort between ABB and SMS group, experts in plant construction and electrical and automation engineering for the metals industry, encompasses the provision of MV motors, MV drives, and a substantial quantity of low-voltage (LV) drives. The project is a significant component of the extensive expansion underway at the Hazira site, already ranking as India’s fifth-largest producer of crude steel. Upon its scheduled launch in 2025, the new mill will augment Hazira’s production capacity by approximately 5.5 million tonnes annually, with a focus on rolling thick cast steel slabs into thinner strips tailored for industrial clients.

ABB’s contribution involves the supply and installation of 13 MV drives and 16 sizable MV motors, forming the essential powertrain for the roughing and finishing mills. In addition to the MV equipment, ABB will provide 14 LV multidrives line-ups and 256 LV inverters to support auxiliary services.

Chris Poynter, Division President for System Drives at ABB Motion, remarked, “This project for SMS group and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel serves as a significant milestone for ABB in India’s rapidly growing metals sector.
