The Byappanahalli-Hosur railway track doubling project, a 48-km corridor linking Bengaluru to Hosur in Tamil Nadu, is progressing towards completion, with 89 per cent of the work finished. The project, built by K-RIDE, comprises 40.5 km in Karnataka and 7.5 km in Tamil Nadu, with the entire stretch being doubled and electrified at 25kV.
Sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 498.7 crore in 2018–19, the project’s cost was later revised to Rs 1,160 crore. The doubling aims to ease congestion on the existing single-line corridor, which has seen growing passenger and freight traffic between Bengaluru and Hosur, by enabling trains to cross without stopping.
The corridor passes through key residential and industrial areas including Bellandur, Carmelaram, Heelalige and Hosur, with stations at Bellandur Road and Huskur upgraded to improve operational capacity. Doubling has already increased train accommodation from two to four on the stretch, with Bellandur Road now featuring five tracks and Huskur four tracks.
The project is designed for 25-tonne axle-load and full electrification with 25kV overhead traction, supporting future freight and passenger service expansion. It is also expected to optimise freight movement toward Hosur, Dharmapuri and Sivadi, strengthening industrial goods transport along the Bengaluru-Tamil Nadu route.
