India Builds Birpur Airport Near Bihar-Nepal Border

Construction and expansion work is gaining momentum at Birpur airport in Bihar’s Supaul district, located near the India-Nepal border and around 10 kilometres from the Koshi Barrage. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav recently conducted an on-site inspection, confirming that tendering has been completed and the project is expected to be finished within a defined timeline.

The airport is being developed at an estimated cost of around INR 648 million and is designed to accommodate Code 2B category aircraft. The existing 1,200-metre runway will be extended to three kilometres to enable commercial aircraft operations. The expanded facility will include a runway, taxiway, apron, perimeter road, ground service area, a modern prefabricated steel terminal building, an air traffic control tower and a fire station.

The state government has approved over INR 423.7 million for the expansion, along with additional approval of more than INR 295.6 million for acquiring 88.83 acres of land across Birpur Mauja, Nag Piprahi and Parmanandpur areas, carried out under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition Act, 2013.

Beyond passenger transport, authorities envision Birpur as a major flying training hub and adventure sports centre, with plans for a flying training school and facilities for gliding, ballooning, skydiving, paragliding and drone activities, in cooperation with India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Aero Club of India.

Given its strategic location near the India-Nepal border, the airport is expected to benefit millions across the Koshi border region and boost commercial and tourism activity in Nepal’s eastern Terai districts.
