Authorities have commenced the major central span work of the new three-lane Edappally railway overbridge, a key bottleneck along the Edappally – Moothakunnam NH 66 corridor, with railways effecting train regulations to facilitate the operation.
The most challenging phase involves the launch of a BOW string girder, to be slid over active railway tracks to connect both sides of the highway corridor. Given the busy nature of the corridor, works are being executed during night hours.
The new Edappally ROB will span a total length of 633 metres and a width of 15 metres. The most critical segment, a massive 63.48-metre span directly over the active railway tracks, utilises specialised steel girders fabricated and transported from Delhi.
An NHAI official confirmed that preparatory work has been completed and girder launch activities are expected to be fully wrapped up within the coming days.
