Tuticorin Airport in Tamil Nadu is undergoing a significant upgradation, scheduled for completion by December 2024. The Rs 3.81 billion project, spearheaded by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), aims to enhance the airport’s operational capacity and overall infrastructure. A key component of the project is the extension of the runway from its current length of 1,350 meters to 3,115 meters, enabling the airport to accommodate larger A-321 type aircraft. This extension is expected to significantly expand the airport’s flight handling capabilities.
The upgrade also includes the construction of a new apron capable of parking five Airbus A-321 type aircraft, along with an isolation bay, a link taxi track, and a part parallel taxi track. These improvements will streamline aircraft movement, reducing congestion and improving overall efficiency. Additionally, a new terminal building, spanning 17,500 square meters, is being constructed to boost passenger handling capacity. Once complete, the terminal will serve 1,440 passengers during peak hours and handle up to 2 million passengers annually.
The new terminal will feature modern amenities, including three aerobridges, and is being designed as a four-star GRIHA-rated energy-efficient building. Sustainability features are integrated into the design, further enhancing the airport’s environmental credentials. The project also includes the construction of a new air traffic control tower, a technical block, and a fire station, ensuring that the airport meets all necessary safety and operational requirements.
Currently, Tuticorin Airport is connected to Chennai and Bengaluru through six daily flights and serves around 300,000 passengers annually. With the planned upgrades, the airport is set to significantly enhance not only passenger services but also boost trade and tourism in Tuticorin and neighboring districts, including Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Nagercoil, and Virudhunagar.
The upgradation of Tuticorin Airport is expected to be a major milestone in improving regional connectivity and supporting economic growth in southern Tamil Nadu.
