Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has secured board and ministerial approval for an extensive Rs 1,00,000 crore expansion project aimed at increasing its production capacity by approximately 75% to 35 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2030.
This ambitious initiative includes several greenfield projects, such as the expansion of the IISCO Steel Plant in West Bengal to a 4 MTPA capacity, focusing on producing high-grade hot-rolled coil (HRC) and API-grade steel for the oil and gas sectors and automotive components.
SAIL is advancing with pre-feasibility studies and detailed project reports (DPR) for expansions at the Bokaro Steel Plant while also initiating brownfield modernisation efforts at the Durgapur Steel Plant, which includes the installation of a new TMT mill with a capacity of 1.4 MTPA. The expansion and modernization efforts at these plants are expected to significantly enhance the production capabilities and product quality, aligning with the increasing market demand for high-strength and durable steel products.
The company is also focused on expanding its research and development (R&D) capabilities to innovate new steel grades and production technologies. By investing in state-of-the-art R&D facilities, SAIL aims to stay at the forefront of technological advancements in steelmaking, ensuring a competitive edge in both domestic and international markets.
Moreover, SAIL is committed to reducing its carbon footprint with a comprehensive decarbonisation strategy, aiming to significantly lower embedded carbon emissions from steelmaking. The company has already achieved a 20% reduction in its initial phase of decarbonisation and aims to reduce emissions to less than 2.3 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of crude steel by 2030-31.
This expansion underscores SAIL’s strategic growth ambitions and its commitment to sustainable steel production amidst evolving environmental challenges.
