Meghalaya Boosts Garo Hills Connectivity with New Bridge and Road Upgrades

CM Conrad K. Sangma has inaugurated two key infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity across the Garo Hills region, reinforcing the state’s focus on inclusive development.

The projects include the Sonagre–Jijikapara Road Bridge over the Bugi River and the widening of the Kujikura–Dimapara Road to a double lane. Speaking at Jijikapara village, Sangma described the bridge as a long-awaited lifeline for local communities that have struggled with limited access for years.

The 90-metre bridge, built under the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project with World Bank support, connects parts of West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills, benefiting several villages across both districts. Officials said the project helps close a critical connectivity gap and improves access to essential services and markets.

In addition, the 4-km Kujikura–Dimapara Road has been upgraded to a double lane, strengthening links between key highways and nearby settlements.

The Chief Minister noted that sustained investments over the years have focused on improving infrastructure in remote areas, ensuring balanced regional growth. He added that collaboration with central agencies continues to play a key role in delivering such projects.
