Railways Consider Extending Palakkad–Kannur Route

Railway authorities are considering extending the Palakkad–Kannur Express beyond its current route to either Kasaragod or Mangaluru, aiming to strengthen connectivity across northern Kerala’s Malabar region.

The proposal was discussed during a consultative meeting between officials of Indian Railways and the Nileshwar Railway Development Collective. According to Palakkad DRM Madhukar Raut, the move responds to rising commuter demand for improved northbound connectivity.

Officials also highlighted strong public response to the Amrit Bharat Express operating between Mangaluru and Nagercoil, with plans to recommend increased frequency if demand remains high.

Alongside service upgrades, Nileshwar Railway Station is set for modernisation. Planned works include a dormitory facility, redevelopment of parking into commercial space, a new parking complex, and air-conditioned lounges in the existing building.

The proposed measures are expected to enhance passenger experience while boosting regional rail infrastructure and local economic activity.
