Planning Ahead for Navi Mumbai’s Skies

CIDCO has appointed a joint venture of RITES Limited and Creative Group LLP to undertake a technocommercial feasibility study for a proposed third runway at Navi Mumbai International Airport.

The study, expected to be completed within six months, will assess technical, operational, environmental and financial aspects of the expansion. It forms part of long-term capacity planning as air traffic demand in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region continues to rise.

Planned as a major aviation hub, NMIA will operate alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport under a dual-airport system. Upon full development, NMIA is designed to handle up to 90 million passengers annually along with significant cargo volumes.

The proposed third runway is expected to enhance operational efficiency and support future aircraft movements. The study’s findings will guide CIDCO’s next steps, reflecting a proactive approach to scaling infrastructure in line with long-term urban and aviation growth.
