Chennai expands its digital infra with launch of new AI data centre.

In another strategic push to digital infrastructure, a new AI data centre is set to launch at Chennai’s Siruseri campus. This ₹4,200 crore investment project aims to strengthen Chennai’s role as a hub for cloud computing and advance digital services. The facility is expected to support growing demand for artificial intelligence workloads, enterprise IT operations and hyperscale cloud deployments.

The Siruseri data centre introduces an initial IT capacity of 7.2 MW and is planned to scale up to 45 MW as the campus reaches full development. The expansion follows the operationalisation of a major facility in Ambattur, signalling sustained investment in Chennai’s data infrastructure amid rising demand for low-latency and high-reliability digital networks in southern India.

Designed for high-density computing, the new facility reflects a shift towards AI-focused infrastructure capable of handling intensive processing requirements. Industry observers note that Chennai’s strong connectivity, skilled workforce and strategic location have made it an attractive destination for large-scale data centre investments.

Urban planners, however, emphasise the importance of integrating such energy-intensive infrastructure with local power grids, utilities and transport systems to ensure sustainable urban growth. Managing energy consumption, cooling requirements and heat loads will remain critical as the city’s digital footprint expands.

Backed by supportive state policies and investment facilitation, the project is expected to generate employment, encourage technology-led entrepreneurship and attract global technology players. The development also aligns with a broader national trend of distributed data centre expansion across major metropolitan regions, reinforcing India’s rapidly growing digital economy while improving network resilience and service reliability.
