Mumbai Starts Multimodal Integration at Ghatkopar Transit Hub

Work has commenced on a major multimodal connectivity upgrade at Ghatkopar railway station in Mumbai, as authorities begin integrating the suburban railway hub with the Mumbai Metro Blue Line to improve commuter circulation and safety. The project targets one of the city’s most congested interchange points, where heavy suburban rail and Metro passenger traffic intersect daily.

The integration works started with the demolition of ageing railway structures, including an existing ticket booking counter, clearing space for new infrastructure aimed at enabling seamless transfers between the two systems. Dismantling activities are currently underway as part of preparatory works for the larger construction programme.

A key feature of the project is the construction of a large elevated deck at the southern end of the station, which will be directly connected to the Metro station concourse. Alongside this, a new foot overbridge is being developed to facilitate safer pedestrian movement and reduce congestion across platforms and access areas. The elevated deck is designed to handle high commuter volumes while improving accessibility and overall station efficiency.

Officials associated with the project indicated that the elevated deck is expected to be completed by mid-April, signalling visible progress on an initiative that has been in planning and follow-up stages for several years.

Once operational, the integrated facility is expected to significantly ease passenger transfers, enhance safety standards and strengthen multimodal transport connectivity across Mumbai’s eastern suburban corridor.
