Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin inaugurated the newly constructed twin bridge at Okkiyam Thoraipakkam on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), marking a key milestone in Chennai’s urban infrastructure upgrade. Built by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) at a cost of ₹60 crore, the four-lane steel bridge replaces the flood-prone existing structure that suffered during Cyclone Michaung in December 2023.
The new bridge offers an expanded waterway of around 205 metres, more than double the earlier 90 metres, along with an additional 1.5 metres of vertical clearance to improve flood discharge. Steel superstructures were adopted to enable faster construction and minimise traffic disruption.
The existing bridge will be demolished, following which two additional one-lane bridges and metro rail viaducts will be constructed alongside the new road bridges.
The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for an integrated multi-modal transport and commercial complex at Mandaveli, to be developed by Chennai Metro Asset Management Limited at an estimated cost of ₹167.09 crore.
