PM Modi Hails Steel Sector as the “Backbone of Rising India”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the Indian steel industry for its growing strength and strategic importance, calling it the “backbone of rising India.” His remarks, made during a recent interaction, underscore the sector’s vital contribution to the country’s economic growth, infrastructure development, and global competitiveness.

PM Modi highlighted the significant transformation the industry has undergone over the last decade, evolving from a largely traditional sector into one that embraces innovation, sustainability, and global best practices. He emphasized that steel is not just a material but a foundation upon which modern India is being built-supporting critical sectors such as construction, railways, defence, and renewable energy.

Referring to the government’s focus on infrastructure-led development, the Prime Minister noted that initiatives like the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), Gati Shakti, and Make in India have created unprecedented demand for steel, thereby positioning the industry as a key driver of the country’s $5 trillion economy vision. He also appreciated the efforts of Indian steelmakers in pursuing green steel and low-emission technologies, aligning with the nation’s climate commitments.

Industry leaders welcomed the Prime Minister’s recognition, stating that it boosts morale and reflects the government’s confidence in the sector. They also reiterated their commitment to increasing production capacities, enhancing sustainability, and supporting national development goals.

The Indian steel industry, currently the second largest in the world, is projected to reach 300 million tonnes of capacity by 2030 under the National Steel Policy. Modi’s endorsement not only affirms its centrality in economic planning but also encourages further investments and innovations in the sector.
