Pune Airport has achieved a significant milestone by handling 144 metric tonnes of cargo within a 24-hour period, marking its highest single-day cargo throughput to date. This record was set between 6:00 AM on June 3 and 6:00 AM on June 4, 2025, encompassing 72.73 metric tonnes of inbound cargo and 71.24 metric tonnes of outbound shipments.
This accomplishment underscores Pune Airport’s growing role as a critical logistics and trade hub in western India. The surge in cargo movement is closely linked to the city’s expanding industrial ecosystem, particularly in sectors like steel, manufacturing, and automotive. Local enterprises are increasingly leveraging air freight to expedite deliveries, streamline supply chains, and maintain competitive advantages in both domestic and global markets.
In the fiscal year 2024–25, Pune Airport handled over 42,000 metric tonnes of cargo, reflecting an 11.8 per cent increase from the previous year. This upward trend highlights the airport’s enhanced capacity and efficiency in managing air freight operations.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been instrumental in upgrading Pune Airport’s infrastructure to accommodate the rising demand. These enhancements include improved cargo handling facilities and streamlined processes, contributing to the airport’s ability to manage higher volumes effectively.
Pune Airport’s achievement not only sets a new benchmark for regional air freight operations but also reinforces its position as a pivotal player in India’s logistics and supply chain network. As the city continues to grow as an industrial powerhouse, the airport’s role in facilitating swift and reliable cargo movement is expected to become increasingly significant.
