The Huilongguan Sports and Cultural Centre, designed by Daqi Architects in collaboration with the China Architecture Design & Research Group, addresses the lack of cultural and sports infrastructure in Beijing’s Huilongguan residential area. Serving over 400,000 residents, the centre is a key project of Beijing’s ‘Huitian Action Plan’, spanning 95,842 sq m with 43,314 sq m above ground. It is divided into two main sections: the sports and fitness centre and the cultural and arts centre.
The sports section includes facilities such as badminton halls, ice skating rinks, climbing gyms, and swimming pools, while the cultural centre features a theatre, library, bookstore, and dining spaces. A standout feature is the library, with a four-storey atrium that connects the indoor space to the outdoor greenery, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The centre’s grand theatre is designed for versatility, hosting various performances with acoustics and visual design tailored to enhance the experience.
Architecturally, the centre integrates indoor and outdoor spaces through multi-level corridors and platform squares, with an emphasis on accessibility and engagement with nature. The design uses a steel frame structure, large-span trusses, and a double-layer grid system, with a striking 18 m high cable curtain wall in the library. BIM technology ensured accuracy and efficiency during construction.
Sustainability is key, with passive design elements like skylights and side windows to optimise lighting and ventilation, reducing energy consumption. The exterior design features light grey, wood-like panels and glass curtain walls, offering a welcoming and modern aesthetic.
Overall, the Huilongguan Sports and Cultural Center combines sports, culture, and sustainability, creating a dynamic and accessible space for the community.
