The Courtyard in Bengaluru, Karnataka was designed with the desire to maintain a connection to the existing house and preserve the garden’s essence. The use of mass-produced components stemmed from the need for cost efficiency and a short timeline, demonstrating that high-quality structures can emerge from industrial materials. The architect’s vision seamlessly blended modern functionality with emotional ties to the site, creating a versatile yet grounded space.

Innovative design elements such as the translucent polycarbonate facade were incorporated to maximise natural light while ensuring adaptability to different lighting needs. The steel structure guarantees stability for various layouts, offering both visual dynamism and practical functionality. Together, these elements provide a space that not only serves its purpose but also enhances user engagement and comfort.

Timeless Transformation
The design of the courtyard was meticulously crafted with the intention of preserving a strong connection to the existing house while honouring the garden’s original essence. The usage of mass-produced components was driven by the need for cost efficiency and a compressed timeline, indicating that high-end structures can be achieved through industrial materials. The architect’s vision harmoniously merged modern functionality with emotional ties to the site, creating a space that is both versatile and rooted in its surroundings.

One of the innovative features is the translucent polycarbonate facade which when thoughtfully fused with integrated internal lighting intensifies and creates the striking light-box effect after dark. This element of the structure enhances the structure’s visibility along the streetscape, and turns the building into a beacon within the urban landscape, creating a dynamic and visually captivating experience. It also features an adaptable drape system which offers precise lighting control, further enhancing the space’s versatility for various events. The operable windows enhance ventilation by allowing fresh air circulation.

Prefabricated Perfection
Steel was selected for its exceptional strength, durability, and ability to span large areas with minimal material, making it an ideal choice for the project. Its prefabricated nature facilitated precise and efficient construction, significantly reducing both costs and timelines. Moreover, steel’s inherent versatility is perfectly aligned with the aesthetic goals of achieving a sleek, industrial, and modern design.

The key challenges during the timeline of this project included preserving as much of the garden as possible and ensuring that the new structure was in seamless harmony with the existing house. Positioning the entrance to open onto the courtyard maintained a strong spatial connection, minimising both physical and visual disruption to the surrounding environment.

The lightweight yet robust steel frame minimised structural loads, allowing for precision assembly that significantly reduced disruptions to the garden and existing structures. Prefabrication further enhanced efficiency by limiting onsite construction activities, ensuring the site’s integrity remained intact throughout the process.

Modular Masterpiece
Sustainability was a core consideration, with the use of durable, recyclable materials like steel and polycarbonate minimising construction waste. The design prioritised natural light and ventilation, effectively reducing energy consumption. Prefabrication also optimised material usage and minimised site disturbance, further reinforcing the project’s commitment to sustainable practices.

The translucent facade created a versatile interior that adapts to different lighting needs, while the steel structure ensures stability for diverse layouts. These elements together provide a functional, visually dynamic space that enhances user engagement and comfort.

Experimental use of polycarbonate and prefabricated steel components demonstrated advanced material applications. The modular design and steel framework support potential vertical or horizontal expansion without compromising the existing structure.
