Hyderabad Metro’s Phase 2 expansion will cover 76.4 km across five corridors, a reduction from the original 116.4 km plan, with the 40 km fourth-city connectivity temporarily deferred. Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) Managing Director NVS Reddy stated that the revised plan aligns with current urban mobility needs.
Key developments include the 7.5-km Old City corridor expansion from MBGS to Chandrayangutta, with land acquisition and demolition set to begin by the end of 2024. The project will introduce faster construction techniques, such as ‘double U’ girders, and feature a 1.6 km double-decker viaduct near Madinaguda to integrate Metro and road traffic. Challenges include a lack of 90% right-of-way for the northern corridor, delaying the Medchal connection. The project has shifted from a PPP model to a joint-venture model, lowering financial burdens with a 2% interest rate and a 40-year repayment plan. Upon completion, the expansion is expected to serve eight lakh passengers daily, enhancing the city’s urban mobility.
The expansion will also facilitate better connectivity to key city hubs, contributing to reduced congestion and faster transit times. With improved infrastructure and an innovative approach, the project is set to support the city’s growth and address long-standing traffic issues, making it a critical component of Hyderabad’s public transport landscape. The revised focus on shorter, high-priority corridors ensures that the city will experience quicker improvements while maintaining sustainability goals.
