Union Minister for Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, recently inaugurated a series of infrastructure projects worth Rs 187.33 crore at Chennai and Kamarajar Ports. These initiatives are aimed at enhancing India’s maritime infrastructure, reinforcing trade capacity, and promoting sustainability through green port initiatives. With an emphasis on modernizing port operations and reducing environmental impact, these projects reflect the country’s commitment to strengthening its position as a global maritime hub.
At Chennai Port, the construction of four new EXIM godowns, covering a total area of 18,000 square meters, was launched. This Rs 73.91 crore project will provide essential storage facilities for sensitive cargo such as agricultural products and food grains. Funded under the Sagarmala scheme, this initiative supports India’s broader trade objectives, helping to increase the port’s handling capacity and streamline operations.
At Kamarajar Port, a significant Rs 88.91 crore expansion project was inaugurated, designed to enhance connectivity with Southern Railway. This development includes the construction of a 2.65 km railway line, three new rail bridges, and upgraded level crossings. The project will double the port’s rail handling capacity, enabling faster and safer transportation of goods. This improved rail connectivity will play a pivotal role in enhancing logistics operations for industries reliant on Kamarajar Port.
In line with India’s commitment to sustainability, another important development at Kamarajar Port is the installation of a shore power supply facility, valued at Rs 20.51 crore. This facility will provide coal vessels with shore power, allowing them to operate without relying on diesel engines while docked. By reducing emissions and minimizing the port’s carbon footprint, this green initiative aligns with India’s Green Port Guidelines, furthering the country’s goals of environmental sustainability and cleaner, more efficient operations within its maritime sector.
These infrastructure projects reflect the Indian government’s efforts to modernize its ports, improve logistics efficiency, and promote sustainability, positioning Chennai and Kamarajar Ports as key players in the global maritime trade network.
