Indore’s much-anticipated metro rail service is expected to begin commercial operations by early 2025, with preparations underway. A Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (MPMRC) official confirmed that the metro will initially run on a 5.9-kilometer stretch from Gandhi Nagar station to station number three on the Super Corridor, following a successful trial run in September 2023. This section has been designated as the ‘super priority corridor.’
The MPMRC aims to launch commercial operations in the new year, with ongoing tests being conducted on the route. Once testing is complete, a report will be submitted to the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), who will then conduct an inspection to ensure all safety measures are in place. Approval from the CMRS is required before commercial operations can begin.
Indore’s metro stations are designed to accommodate six-coach trains, but initially, three-coach trains will be used. Each coach can carry up to 300 passengers, including 50 seated. The first phase of the metro rail project, launched in September 2019, is estimated to cost Rs 75 billion and will eventually cover a 31.5-kilometer stretch across the city.
