Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) is embarking on an ambitious expansion plan for its international terminal, with a significant investment of Rs 700 crore. The construction is scheduled to begin in December, marking a pivotal step in enhancing the airport’s capacity and services. Once completed, the terminal will accommodate 44 aircraft, an increase from its current capacity of 36, thereby improving operational efficiency and enabling the airport to better serve the growing number of travelers.
The expansion project will introduce a range of state-of-the-art amenities designed to enhance the passenger experience. An official from CIAL highlighted that the upgraded terminal will feature a stunning variety of retail outlets, offering both local and international brands, alongside luxurious lounge areas that promise an exceptional standard of service. This focus on retail and relaxation aims to create a world-class environment for travelers, making their journey through the airport more enjoyable.
A key aspect of the expansion is the development of a new apron covering 1.5 million square feet on the northern side of the terminal, which is currently nearing completion. This new apron will facilitate the efficient handling of additional aircraft and improve the overall flow of operations at the airport.
CIAL’s strategic expansion plans are part of a broader vision, as the airport had previously announced seven major development projects last year. One of these projects—a luxury aero lounge complete with accommodation facilities—was successfully launched last month, reflecting CIAL’s commitment to providing top-notch amenities for its passengers.
Additionally, in its efforts to modernize operations and enhance passenger convenience, the Digi Yatra initiative was inaugurated in October 2023. This initiative aims to expedite security checks through advanced technology, ensuring a smoother and more efficient travel experience for all passengers.
With these developments, CIAL is positioning itself as a leading international airport, dedicated to meeting the demands of the aviation sector while providing unparalleled service and convenience for travelers.
