Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog Ashok Kumar Lahiri has released a report titled “Key Sectors to Position India as a Global Manufacturing Hub”, highlighting 12 priority sectors with strong potential for global competitiveness, local value addition, job creation and deeper integration into global supply chains.
The report lays down a strategic roadmap to strengthen India’s manufacturing ecosystem and support the vision of Viksit Bharat. The 12 shortlisted sectors include automobiles, electronics, steel, capital goods, defence and drones, chemicals, solar PV, textiles, pharmaceuticals and medical devices, telecom equipment, leather and footwear, and food processing.
Addressing the occasion, Dr Lahiri emphasised that manufacturing must play a significantly larger role in fulfilling India’s long-term growth aspirations, noting that sustained economic transformation across most countries has consistently been driven by strong manufacturing and expanding exports. He highlighted that the global manufacturing landscape is undergoing rapid change as businesses actively seek to diversify their supply chains, and expressed confidence that the report will serve as a useful reference for policymakers, government, industry leaders and researchers working to strengthen India’s manufacturing ecosystem.
