Marking the end of one of the most iconic and oldest production units, Parle Products is officially shutting down its Vile Parle, Mumbai unit. While production at this facility had already stopped in 2016, the building will now be demolished to make way for a commercial complex.
This building was the original manufacturing unit for the people’s favourite Parle biscuits, which began operations in 1929. Spread over an area of 13.45 acres (54,438.80 sq m), the unit operated for nearly 87 years. The site is now set for redevelopment, with a proposed built-up area of 1,90,360.52 sq m.
The redevelopment plan proposes four buildings, along with two dedicated parking towers of three and six storeys. The planned commercial complex will feature office spaces, retail outlets, restaurants, and parking facilities, covering over 1.9 lakh square metres. The commercial compound is also expected to include food courts.
The demolition of this unit may be an emotional sight for consumers, but the production of Parle biscuits will not be affected and will continue uninterrupted from the company’s other manufacturing units.
