Punjab minister Harbhajan Singh ETO laid the foundation stone of a new 111.24-metre high-level steel bridge to be constructed over the Sirhind Canal in Ropar, replacing the old bridge considered a lifeline of the Ropar main market.
The bridge, being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 16.38 crore, is expected to significantly strengthen Ropar’s infrastructure while streamlining traffic and boosting local commercial activities. ETO said the project fulfils a long-pending requirement of city residents, describing the bridge as a crucial link connecting the Rupnagar market with different parts of the city.
The existing bridge, constructed in 1884–85, is being replaced with a modern structure that will improve traffic flow and provide safer transportation for daily commuters. ETO added that the new bridge would provide major relief to visitors and traders coming to the Ropar market while giving fresh impetus to commercial activities and further strengthening the city’s infrastructure.
Ropar MLA Dinesh Chadha said the project fulfils a long-pending demand of the people of Ropar, calling it a major gift to city residents.
