DRDO Transfers Defence Steel Tech to SAIL’s Rourkela Plant

SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant has received the technology for manufacturing DMR-249B defence-grade steel plates from the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory

Steel Authority of India Limited’s (SAIL) Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has received the technology for manufacturing DMR-249B defence-grade steel plates from the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), a laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), strengthening the country’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has received the technology for manufacturing DMR-249B defence-grade steel plates from the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL). This is the laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) that is strengthening the country’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.

Under the Licensing Agreement for Transfer of Technology (LAToT), DMRL has transferred the manufacturing technology for DMR-249B steel plates in the 8-30 mm thickness range to SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant and Alloy Steel Plant (ASP), Durgapur. These high-strength steel plates are used in specialised naval construction.
DMRL has also transferred the manufacturing technology for DMR-249A and DMR-249BK grade steel billets to ASP, Durgapur for use in the construction of naval ships and submarines.

The technology transfer agreement was handed over by DRDO officials to SAIL representatives at Hyderabad, following which the LAToT documents were formally handed over to RSP Executive Director (Works) B. R. Palai at a function held at the plant.
Developed indigenously by DMRL, DMR-249B is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel designed for naval shipbuilding. The steel offers a high strength-to-weight ratio, enabling lighter and more resilient hull structures for warships, submarines and other combat vessels while reducing dependence on imports.
