Assam Gets Major Road and Bridge Infrastructure Funding

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has approved infrastructure projects worth ₹747.72 crore to strengthen road and bridge connectivity across Assam, marking a significant investment aimed at upgrading transport infrastructure in Northeast India.

The funding, sanctioned under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF), will support the execution of 26 road and bridge projects designed to enhance mobility between remote regions and key urban centres. Authorities stated that the initiative focuses on improving accessibility, reducing travel disruptions and supporting regional economic development through stronger transport networks.

A major portion of the allocation has been directed towards 16 bridge projects under the CRIF Setu Bandhan scheme. The programme prioritises the replacement of ageing bridge structures and the construction of new crossings to ensure reliable connectivity, particularly during Assam’s monsoon season when flooding often disrupts road links.

Officials noted that the projects are expected to improve logistics efficiency, facilitate smoother passenger and freight movement, and strengthen last-mile connectivity across several districts. Upgraded infrastructure is also anticipated to support local trade, agriculture and small businesses by improving access to markets and essential services.
