Diplomatic Talks Resume Amid Global Trade Fairness Concerns

India has formally opposed the United States’ decision to reintroduce import duties on steel and aluminum, calling it a threat to global trade fairness. Bilateral discussions are expected to address the issue, with India advocating for equitable market access for its exporters.

The dispute began in 2018 when the US imposed 25% tariffs on steel and 10% on aluminum, citing national security risks. India retaliated with duties on 28 US products. A 2020 WTO-brokered truce temporarily resolved tensions, but the US’s renewed tariffs have reignited friction.

Under the 2020 agreement, India withdrew its retaliatory duties in exchange for US commitments to fairer trade practices. With tariffs resurfacing, India now seeks urgent dialogue to protect its steel and aluminum industries from unequal treatment.

Why Global Trade Fairness Matters

Unfair tariffs distort markets and disadvantage developing economies. India’s push for global trade fairness aligns with broader efforts to reform WTO rules and ensure balanced competition. Experts argue that resolving this dispute could set a precedent for future trade negotiations.
