The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has released the third edition of the Product Category Rules (PCR) for North American Steel Construction Products. This updated edition offers more precise and standardized guidance for creating Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), a vital tool in assessing the environmental performance of steel products. The initiative marks a significant step toward greater transparency and uniformity across the steel industry.
Developed under the Program Operator Smart EPD, the new PCR reflects over a year of collaborative work led by AISI, involving nearly 30 technical experts from diverse backgrounds—industry veterans, consultants, academics, and government officials. Their combined expertise has helped shape a document that will serve as a key reference point for manufacturers and specifiers alike.
Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO of AISI, emphasized the importance of the update:
“ AISI is proud to have helped lead this expansive effort to update the guidelines that determine the calculation and reporting of environmental impacts for steel products. Our goal is to ensure that EPDs are comprehensive and consistent, further cementing the American steel industry’s leadership as one of the cleanest among major steel-producing nations. ”
This renewed focus on environmental accountability resonates deeply with the ongoing transformation within the global construction sector—where sustainability, material transparency, and lifecycle thinking are fast becoming non-negotiable standards.
In this evolving context, the Steel Construction Expo, taking place from 27th to 29th November at Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai , offers an ideal platform to witness how these guidelines are translating into real-world applications. The expo will bring together thought leaders, innovators, and manufacturers to showcase cutting-edge solutions that align with the principles laid out in AISI’s updated PCR.
Whether you’re a specifier seeking EPD-compliant products or a professional exploring the future of sustainable construction, this event promises valuable insights and networking opportunities.
Visit the Expo and be part of the movement shaping a cleaner, smarter, and more responsible built environment.
