The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is on track to complete its ambitious 197 km feasibility study by July 2025, marking a major step towards expanding the Namma Metro network. The study, covering eight key corridors, will be submitted to the Karnataka government for approval.
Among the proposed expansions is the extension of the Airport Line to Devanahalli, as announced in the recent State Budget by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Other planned corridors extend beyond the city to Harohalli, Bidadi, Tumakuru, and Devanahalli, with support from Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, Home Minister G Parameshwara, and Minister K H Muniyappa.
However, the opposition BJP, including MPs Tejasvi Surya and P C Mohan, has raised concerns, suggesting that suburban and circular rail systems would be more cost-effective for these outer regions. The proposed 287 km circular rail network, estimated at Rs 23,000 crore, aims to improve connectivity to areas like Devanahalli, Doddaballapur, and Malur.
The feasibility study includes a 68 km route from Kalena Agrahara to Kadugodi Tree Park, a 52.41 km link to Tumakuru, and a 15 km stretch connecting KR Puram to Hoskote. Around 100 km of these corridors are expected to move forward for development. Once the study is submitted, the Karnataka government will decide which routes will proceed to the detailed project report (DPR) stage, followed by land acquisition, environmental clearances, financial planning, and construction.
If approved, the expansion will grow Bengaluru’s metro network to nearly 350 km, improving the city’s connectivity and urban mobility.
