SAIL (Steel Authority of India Ltd) is set to significantly increase the capacity of its Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in Odisha, with plans to raise production to approximately nine million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The expansion, which will involve a substantial investment of Rs 30,000 crore, aims to enhance supply to key sectors such as defense, oil & gas, and automobiles.
Upon completion, RSP will contribute around 25 per cent to SAIL’s target of 35 MTPA by 2030. Established in the 1950s, RSP is India’s first public sector steel plant and was originally set up in collaboration with Germany. The expansion, covering an area of 1,200 acres, will involve constructing new facilities, including coke ovens, sinter plants, and rolling mills, along with a new blast furnace and steel melting shop.
A new railway line is also being developed to streamline logistics and improve raw material movement.
Currently, RSP contributes 4.4 MTPA to SAIL’s total steelmaking capacity of 20.30 MTPA. This investment will ensure that RSP plays a significant role in meeting growing steel demand across various industries.
