India is set to take a major leap in aviation with the development of its first offshore airport, located near Mumbai. The proposed Vadhvan Airport will be constructed on an artificial island near the Vadhvan seaport, inspired by globally recognised offshore airports like Hong Kong International and Osaka’s Kansai International Airport.

The project has recently received initial approvals from India’s environment and defense ministries, along with the Maharashtra state government. Feasibility studies will be conducted with support from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), following which the investment estimate will be finalized.

Situated about 125 km from Mumbai’s existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Vadhvan Airport is poised to enhance India’s air connectivity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously alluded to the project’s commencement during a Maharashtra election rally.
