The Vijayawada Metro Rail project is gaining momentum as officials from the Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (APMRC) take steps to advance its development. While an initial notification was issued earlier, progress had stalled. Now, new proposals have been submitted, outlining the requirements for the next phase.
Phase 1 of the metro will focus on two corridors, featuring a total of 34 stations. The first corridor will begin at PNBS, passing through Vijayawada Railway Station, Eluru Road, and Ramavarappadu, before extending to Gannavaram. The second corridor, spanning 12.5 km, will also start at PNBS and travel through Bandaru Road, Benz Circle, Autonagar, Kannur, and Poranki, concluding at Penamalur. Key landmarks along this route include Victoria Museum, Indira Gandhi Stadium, and Krishnanagar.
A change in the original plan has shifted the coach depot location from Nidamanur to Kesarpalli. While the initial metro blueprint included four corridors, the current focus is on these two primary routes. A coordination meeting involving Metro Rail officials and district authorities is expected soon to streamline the next steps.
