The long-awaited expansion of Coimbatore International Airport is progressing as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has officially acquired 470.17 acres of land, with preliminary work now underway. In total, 632.95 acres have been allocated for the project, including patta land, defence land, and government poramboke land, covering 23 blocks across four villages—Singanallur, Uppilippalayam, Kalapatti, and Irugur.
The expansion includes a runway extension from 9,500 feet to 12,500 feet, allowing the airport to handle larger aircraft and improve international connectivity. Located in Peelamedu, just 11 km from the city centre, the airport has been struggling with increasing passenger traffic, which surged to 30 lakh in 2024—far beyond its current capacity of 20 lakh.
Passenger traffic has seen remarkable growth, with international travellers rising from 51,934 in 2021 to 2,35,582 in 2024 and domestic passengers increasing from 12.2 lakh to 28.2 lakh in the same period. With projections exceeding 35 lakh passengers in 2025, the expansion is set to transform Coimbatore’s aviation infrastructure and address growing travel demands.
