Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has announced the redevelopment of Terminal 1 (T1) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). Work will begin in November 2025. The project aims to enhance passenger capacity by 42% and accommodate up to 20 million passengers annually upon completion by 2028-29.
The redevelopment will be executed in phases to minimise disruption, starting with the demolition of the existing structure. During construction, Terminal 2 (T2) and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) will handle the additional traffic to ensure seamless operations.
Designed to be India’s first brownfield, biophilic, and sustainable airport, the new T1 will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, including district cooling, advanced electrical substations, and an upgraded baggage handling system. A Multi-Modal Transit Hub (MMTH) will integrate air, rail, and road connectivity, offering direct metro access and underground bus stations. Inspired by ocean waves, the terminal’s architecture will incorporate futuristic, nature-inspired designs, enhancing passenger experience with natural light and open spaces.
MIAL, operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), is overseeing the project, aiming to establish CSMIA as a benchmark for sustainable airport design. Airlines and stakeholders will be informed in advance to ensure smooth flight operations during the transition. Advanced technologies such as DigiYatra, self-baggage drop, and e-Gates will streamline passenger movement.
