In the heart of Nepal, the Marriott Hotel exemplifies modern architectural design and sustainable building practices. Spanning 23,378.98 sq m on a 1.39-acre plot, it seamlessly blends luxury, comfort, and environmental consciousness.

Inaugurated in 2019, the Marriott Hotel features 214 rooms, including deluxe and suite options, designed to deliver a balance of elegance and functionality. Situated in an earthquake-prone region, the hotel combines architectural innovation, structural resilience, and sustainability, addressing the specific challenges of the area.

The design balances the efficient use of space with an exterior that combines modern materials and elements inspired by Nepalese culture. This approach creates an inviting, culturally rich ambience for international travellers. Regional seismic risks were thoughtfully addressed, resulting in a visually striking yet structurally resilient building. Its 228 bays offer a variety of accommodations, crafted to combine comfort and operational efficiency.

Steel was crucial to the design, offering the strength and flexibility needed for expansive layouts and facades that reflect elements of Nepal’s heritage while fitting into the local environment. Moreover, advanced steel techniques ensured earthquake resilience by enabling moment-resisting frames and safety elements, optimising performance, reducing waste, and meeting strict safety standards.

Earning a LEED Gold certification by prioritising sustainability through initiatives like water conservation, solar energy integration, and the use of recycled steel, which reduces transportation emissions and supports local industries. The hotel’s mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were engineered for sustainability, with lightweight steel accelerating the installation of energy-efficient systems, including solar panels, water recycling plants, and HVAC systems. This approach reflects a commitment to sustainable hospitality while addressing regional priorities such as seismic safety and resource conservation.

The Marriott Hotel in Nepal exemplifies how luxury and environmental innovation can coexist, setting a benchmark for modern, sustainable hospitality.

“The Marriott Hotel in Kathmandu addresses seismic challenges while delivering a seamless blend of luxury, comfort, and efficiency. Steel played a pivotal role in creating expansive layouts, intricate facades inspired by Nepal’s cultural heritage, and advanced earthquake-resilient systems. This material ensured structural safety, optimised construction efficiency, and reduced waste, meeting stringent safety standards while supporting sustainable design. The result is a visually captivating and functionally resilient building that harmonises global appeal with local context, setting a benchmark for modern hospitality in earthquake-prone regions.”
