Construction of the 5-km elevated Baradevi-Naubasta section on Kanpur Metro’s Corridor-1 (IIT to Naubasta) is advancing swiftly, incorporating renewable energy solutions. The pre-engineered building (PEB) roof structure at Baradevi station is complete, unveiling its outline to the city.
The section’s five stations—Baradevi, Kidwai Nagar, Vasant Vihar, Buddha Nagar, and Naubasta—are designed to maximise solar energy use, replicating the Priority Corridor’s model. PEB structures feature translucent sheets that utilise natural sunlight to illuminate platforms, reducing dependence on artificial lighting and conserving energy.
With platform casting for all five stations completed in September, work is underway on PEB structures and concourse-level technical rooms. Major milestones, including the erection of precast structures, have been achieved. According to UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar, trial runs from Moti Jheel to Kanpur Central are scheduled soon, with passenger services expected by January 2025.
Currently, Kanpur Metro operates passenger services on a 9-km stretch of the Priority Corridor connecting IIT and Moti Jheel. This extension to Naubasta will significantly enhance connectivity, linking key residential and commercial areas while promoting sustainable urban mobility. The project reflects a commitment to providing efficient, eco-friendly transit options, catering to the needs of a rapidly growing urban population.
