Construction of Chennai Metro’s Phase 2 is advancing swiftly, with 90% of the tunneling work completed across key corridors. Covering 118.9 kilometers, this phase includes three major corridors: Madhavaram to SIPCOT, Light House to Poonamallee, and CMBT to Sholinganallur. The expansion aims to enhance connectivity, reduce commute times, and alleviate road traffic congestion by linking busy and growing regions of the city.

Focus remains on tunneling and constructing 48 underground stations, with significant progress noted on the Madhavaram to Taramani stretch. The corridor between Madhavaram and SIPCOT, spanning 45.8 kilometers, will be crucial in connecting northern and southern Chennai.

Once complete, Phase 2 will serve millions of commuters and integrate with other transport systems, including suburban railways and buses, facilitating smoother travel across Chennai. Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) plans to finish this phase by 2026, with ongoing progress expected to meet the timeline. The project promises to boost economic growth, lower carbon emissions, and enhance public transit access, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable urban mobility framework.
