South India’s inaugural double-decker rail-cum-road flyover has opened for a partial trial run, as announced by officials. Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D. K. Shivakumar led a ‘trial walk’ on the newly constructed flyover, which stretches from Ragigudda to Central Silk Board and is a key segment of the Bengaluru Metro’s Yellow Line.
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy and other officials also attended the event. Built by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) at a cost of Rs 4.49 billion, the flyover is currently open for traffic on one side only.
The Central Silk Board Junction, a major traffic hotspot intersecting the Outer Ring Road and Hosur Road, is known for severe congestion. The new flyover aims to reduce this traffic bottleneck, featuring loops and ramps designed to improve traffic flow from Ragigudda to Central Silk Board.
According to BMRCL, the 5.12 km rail-cum-road flyover facilitates signal-free travel from Ragigudda to HSR Layout and Hosur Road, potentially reducing travel time by over 30 percent. The ramps connecting HSR Layout to the road flyover towards Ragigudda and BTM Layout, spanning 1.37 km, are still under construction and expected to be finished by June 2025.
This innovative rail-cum-road flyover highlights Bengaluru’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure.
